Windsurf Cascade on JetBrains: agent gravity outside VS Code forks
What happened
What happened: Windsurf’s Cascade continues to be positioned as an agentic coding layer with Write/Chat modes, terminal execution levels (Off/Auto/Turbo), and JetBrains plugin gravity—not only a Cursor competitor in VS Code-land (verify current docs). Tool impact: teams refused to leave IntelliJ/PyCharm now have a credible “agent in my real IDE” story, which reframes Copilot ubiquity vs Cursor fork lock-in.
Tool impact
Switch or not?
If your team is JetBrains-native, trial Cascade before forcing Cursor. If you’re already Cursor-fluent, don’t switch for plugin parity alone—measure agent finish rate on your repo.
Money / risk
Another agent seat beside Copilot/Cursor recreates the June metered-stack problem. Pick one primary agent surface per IDE family.
