What happened: Codex CLI 0.153.0 (early Sep 2026 coverage) adds Vim-style editing, a plugin marketplace install path, automatic session recaps, richer history, and earlier rate-limit warnings for Plus/Team. Tool impact: Codex gets more “daily terminal IDE” muscle, narrowing the lifestyle gap with Claude Code for developers who refuse a separate AI GUI. Still a different gravity well than Cursor’s multi-file IDE agent.
Tool impact
Switch or not?
Worth enabling if you already pay OpenAI and live in the terminal. Not a reason to abandon Cursor if the IDE agent UX is your bottleneck—or Claude Code if unattended/MCP policy is.
Money / risk
Rate-limit warnings help, but plugin + long recap loops still spend the same ChatGPT/API envelope. Avoid running Codex CLI + Cursor Ultra-class agents on identical tickets without a budget owner.
